Today I spent a couple hours going through a box of mail that had piled up while I was away. While sorting my mail I turned on the local news to get caught up on what is happening in the Seattle area. Breaking News Alert! If you are unaware, the top story on today’s news is a potential garbage hauler strike. Based on the local news people seem quite up in arms about this potential strike. One local resident stated that “it would be devastating” if the garbage strike were to happen.
Over the past 7 months I have been exposed to some situations that I would definitely call devastating. I don’t know how dramatically my perspective has changed but I cannot figure out from any stretch of my imagination how a garbage hauler strike could be referred to as devastating even from a western perspective. The worst situation I can see is that people would be slightly inconvenienced for a couple of days.
At the same time one of the things that I have been impressed by, since arriving back in America, is how clean everything is. There is NO garbage lying around. This is especially true in comparison to Niger. There are a couple of people who burn their trash but most people just throw all their trash out in the street. Trash is scattered throughout town for goats and sheep to munch on. Trees are decorated with plastic bags that have been caught on thorns. If the strike does happen, I sure hope that people don’t start throwing their garbage out into the street--but I still don't think I would call it devastating.

I have to agree that people in America don't realize how good they have it, We all need to give thanks for all that we do have, Clean Water, Food, and mostly not trash in the trees :-)
Glad you are getting caught up on your rest and hope you are feeling better and ready for Easter
Hi there Alissa,
I found your blog from The Former Optomist blog. I enjoyed reading your posts about your trip to Niger. You must be quite an adventurous young lady to go to Africa. That is admirable.
