It was an exciting day today focused on learning language and starting relationships. I was able to meet quite a few people in the village today all by myself!!!
Today was also the first day with my language helper, Mama Falina. She is in the back center of above photo. For lunch she taught me to make ugali which I ate with her family. I wasn’t sure how culturally appropriate it was since we are in the middle of Ramadan, but she insisted. I discovered that it is fairly easy to get people to teach you names of things but trying to get someone to use that word in a sentence is something I have not figured out.
I learned some additional vocab from the village kids--chicken, goat, house, kitten, bike, swing, tire, leaf, sugar cane. I had thought I had learned the word for tree, chembe, but come to find out it actually means mango. I guess we only climbed mango trees. I must remember to diversify types of trees next time.
Theater across the road that is very loud all hours of day and night.
Where everyone in Chanica village gets water, including me. I believe there is about 1000 people that live in Chanica.
