Silence

It was a very quiet day in the village today since the power was out most of the day….yeah!! But it is back on now so the speakers are blasting away.

There are actually two different video huts that that try to compete to be the loudest. Not to mention the neighbors that are not too far behind with their radios. I have yet to actually go to the movies although I have heard each of them about 500 times. I believe a lot of them are music videos. I guess one of these days I will need to get the complete experience and check it out. It is definitely the happening place to be. I think it only costs about the equivalent of 5 cents. The video huts are in full business at 6 am at the latest and stop at 10pm at the earliest. Sometimes they are even on at 2am. One morning I woke up to helicopters and machine guns….Rambo was starting out the day. From what I understand most of them are Nigerian and Malawian produced DVDs but occasionally I hear English (although it is rare to find someone who speaks English).

This is the last village on the road out of town that has electricity and it was installed less than a year ago. I guess everyone wants to make up for the lack of electronic noise from previous years. I never expected electronic noise to be the most difficult thing to adjust to. I was ready to deal with no indoor plumbing, dirty water, lack of communication, no electricity, loneliness and dirt but NOT constant high volume noise.
