I made it!!! A very looooong set of flights and then a drive south to Blantyre, Malawi.
Yesterday, a friend of the team that I am visiting was having his graduation ceremony. It was a very nice ceremony, about 600 proud graduates and their families from all of the universities in Malawi. There was a very nice prayer at the beginning in Jesus name. It was a great initial glimpse into culture but I suspect it is quite different from village life. The president attended and spoke since he is the chancellor of all of the Universities in Malawi. His motorcade was extensive and even included a Winnebago.
The president even stood for him when he presented him with his diploma. Not many people can say they received their diploma from the president. I think I gave a congratulatory hand shake within 10 minutes of the ceremony so I practically (second hand) can claim I shook the presidents hand my first day here.
Word on the street is that I may also get to see the Mozambique president when he comes to town in October.
Today we are finishing shopping and errands in Malawi then heading to Mozambique where I will be able to meet the rest of the team members.
Question of the day: Any distinctive people you have seen lately?
